Domestic accidents are the leading cause of death among children 1 to 14 years of age and the third leading cause of mortality in France. Parents need to be vigilant and to educate children, emphasises a study.

Nine out of ten parents say they have already had a risk behaviour in the presence of their(s) child(ren). It is the result of a study OpinionWay* on the domestic accidents carried out in 2018 for the association’s Attitude Prevention. The press release reports that 67% of surveyed parents have already had another activity in the kitchen (telephone, television), 63% were picked up or handled pieces of glass without protection, while 57% have already walked on a wet floor or slippery.

Last point : 28% of parents have used chemicals with hazard pictograms without reading the instructions or without special protection. Moreover, the participants of the study are almost half to change a light bulb or a fuse without turning off the power general.

A major cause of death in children

The risks of these situations, however, are real : the home and leisure accidents represent the first cause of death among children 1 to 14 years of age and the third leading cause of mortality in france. The report reveals that more than 4 out of 10 children aged between 6 and 12 years reported having already had an accident in their home.

What piece are we the most exposed to accidents of everyday life ? The study reports that 4 accidents in 5 place in the home and more than half… In the kitchen (cuts, burns, falls).

A necessary awareness

Despite the frequent accidents in France, parents are raising the children. Call an emergency number, perform specific gestures, shelter… 79% of children say they have received from their parents guidelines to follow in case of emergency.

“In addition to our advice to our children, it is essential to show them the right example on a daily basis so they can, in turn, adopt the right attitude”, informs Jean-Francois Boulat, President of the Commission accidents of life current Attitude of Prevention.

* The study was carried out by OpinionWay for the association’s Attitude Prevention on the Internet between may 28 and June 8, 2018 with 1.502 parents with at least one child under 15 years of age and with 500 children aged between 6 and 12 years old.
