Astronomers see the birth of double neutron stars

Astronomers observed the development of the outbreak from the first hours of its occurrence.

Scientists first observed the formation of double system of neutron stars. Abnormally weak supernova explosion has led to the birth of the couple, which in the future may die in the merge, causing a burst of gravitational waves.

The achievement says a scientific paper published in the journal Science by a large international team of astronomers.

Unusual explosion, the designation iPTF 14gqr, was seen in the review of the iPTF, specifically designed to search for supernovae and other flaring events. When the rotation of the Earth need a point disappeared over the horizon, the baton was picked up by other telescopes.

Observers have determined that the supernova explosion of class Ic. A flash, like a supernova almost all the other classes, with the exception of Ia, occurs when the explosion of the core of a massive star in the final stages of its existence.

As supernovae explode only core of stars with mass of not less than eight suns. This time, however, the mass of emitted substances amounted to only 0.2 solar, which is very interested astronomers. Evaluation of the kinetic energy of the expanding matter also showed that it is surprisingly small for such events (though by earthly standards, a figure of 2 × 1043 joules not be called modest).

“We have seen the collapse of the core of this massive star, but we saw surprisingly little of the ejected mass, explains study co-author, Mansi, Kasliwal (Mansi Kasliwal). “We called a supernova with ultracrete shell, and has long been predicted that they exist. [But] this is the first case, when we convincingly observed the collapse of the core of a massive star, which is so devoid of matter.”

Originally the Orb was massive, otherwise it never erupted as a supernova. However, by the time of the explosion a large part of its substance was somehow lost.

Astronomers know only one realistic mechanism for such a loss: “cannibalism” on the part of the companion in a binary system. Gravity is a partner pulls him matter, and star of “losing weight”. As such a predator can be a white dwarf, black hole or neutron star. Performing calculations, the authors chose the second option.
