The head of government of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki canceled a visit to Israel. The reason was the statement of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the Holocaust – “poles collaborated with the Germans.”
The scandal of Poland summoned the Israeli Ambassador on Sunday, February 17, stated that Mr. Morawiecki not go to a summit in Israel, according to BBC. We are talking about the meeting of leaders of the Visegrad group, which comprises Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia (these countries were United in a kind of international group in 1991 with the main goal – integration into Euro-Atlantic structures).
From-for what there was a conflict between Poland and Israel?
Benjamin Netanyahu visited Poland with an official visit on Thursday, February 14. In Warsaw during the briefing, he commented on the Polish law on liability for the charges of the Polish people and the Polish state in the crimes of the Holocaust.
The law, which was commented by the leader of Israel, in Poland adopted at the beginning of 2019. It provides for criminal liability up to three years of imprisonment for the indictment of Poland and the Polish people, in cooperation with the Nazis during the Second world war. The law has caused an extremely negative reaction in the United States and Israel, therefore, subsequently the item on the criminal responsibility seized.
Serez statements of the Israeli Prime Minister was that “poles collaborated with the Germans,” but Netanyahu, though, doesn’t know anyone who would be condemned for such statements. The Israeli publication Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post quoted the leader of Israel in their articles. The statements of Netanyahu aroused the indignation of the Polish politicians and society.
What was the reaction in Poland and Israel?
“The Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki fundamentally relates to the question of the charges of the Polish state and nation concerning actions that the poles did not commit during the Second world war”, – said the head of the office of the Prime Minister michał dworczyk. According to him, statements by Netanyahu provoked a new debate, “in which there were a lot of unfair and untrue accusations towards Poland.”
In the administration, Netanyahu issued a clarification: “At the briefing, Prime Minister Netanyahu was talking about poles, not about the Polish people or of Poland.” However, Warsaw explanations did not satisfy.
In a post on Twitter, Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki stressed that “the poles and the Jews were brutally murdered by the Germans, and the Polish soldiers daily fought for freedom and the lives of all peoples.”
By the way, Moravicki not denied the summit of the Visegrad four in the presence of Poland, offering himself instead of the head of the Ministry of foreign Affairs Jacek Czaputowicz.
