At the moment, does not consider NATO membershipby the President of Finland Sauli Niinistö is not going to lead the country to join the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) because of the risk of “become the enemy of Russia.” He said this in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to RBC-Ukraine
According to Niinistö, the country has the opportunity to join NATO. However, Finland is bordered by Russia and does not want to interfere with a neighbor.
“We can’t change geography. We are neighbors and we have a common border of 1,300 kilometers. It is about the same border as we have with other countries of the EU and NATO,” – said Niinistö.
In August, at a press conference after talks with Finnish President Putin said that Russia will be forced to respond to the promotion of infrastructure of NATO to its borders and the emergence around them of missile defense.
“The Russians have made it clear that when they look across the border, they see the Finns. If we were in NATO, they would see enemies. It is their position,” – said the President of Finland.
We will remind, after meeting with John Bolton, the US presidential Advisor for national security, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the Alliance does not intend to retreat before the pressure of Russia.
