In the genre of “guy who has the schkoumoune”, Guillermo Del Toro was up to present one hell of a challenger : we would picnic Hellboy for the reboot, he is deprived of Pacific Rim to do anything and its big projects characters as the adaptation of Mountains of Madness Lovecraft wades in the semolina. But it has the resource.

And then, above all, now, Guillermo del Toro, he has received two Oscars (4 for the film) and a golden Lion for the Shape of The water so, necessarily, you are talking to him otherwise. And this makes us extremely happy indeed, because it is one of the filmmakers most haunted by his work and sincere in his relationship with the cinema. Then, to see it grind to fit new projects, and that made us really badly in the heart.

Guillermo Del Toro thrilled, and we also

Among the films he wasn’t able to fund, there was his Pinocchio, the production of which has been started since 10 years ago, but that seems to much not match the canons of business that Del Toro has never been able to collect the $ 35 million needed to finance it. Until last month, where we learned with a joy not concealed that the project was finally on track, given that Netflix funded and broadcast on its network.

Excellent news in more ways than one, the freedom of tone of which the director will benefit from not being the last on the list. Because, you see, Pinocchio will not be really for children, as Del Toro has yet repeated it recently at the Marrakech film festival :

Pinocchio

“This is not really a movie for the whole family. Actually, with a Pinocchio located in the Italy of Mussolini, it is not necessary to expect anything else. Yes, it’s about a puppet during the rise of fascism. It is so rare that you can find yourself in a productive discussion in real life at the moment, it is so tense. In fact, it will be much easier for you to listen to me if I told you There was a time…”

A challenge to the height of the man, therefore, particularly comfortable with the fable political dark, for who would remember his Pan’s Labyrinth. And for Del Toro, things are clear when it comes to Pinocchio :

“It’s about a creature that has been manufactured by means of surreal and then takes his distances, to make the experience of pain, of failure and of loneliness.”

Yeah, this is clearly not the version Disney what. So much the better !
