Russia called for the release of wrongfully convicted Ukrainian Director Oleg Sentsov, who is serving 20 years of imprisonment in a polar colony in Labytnangi, at the presentation of the Sakharov prize in Strasbourg. This statement was made by the European Commissioner for European neighbourhood policy Johannes Hahn,
He reminded that the award ceremony will be held on December 12.
“Next week, the Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov will be awarded the Sakharov prize by the European Parliament. Sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, he will not be able to personally receive the award. So I re-called to release Sentsov to receive the Sakharov prize”, — wrote the Commissioner on Twitter.
The award is named after Andrei Sakharov “For freedom of thought” was established by the European Parliament in 1988 and is awarded for outstanding contribution to the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. In monetary terms, the award amount is 50 thousand euros.
For the award after being nominated was proposed by the Faction of the European people’s party (EPP) in the European Parliament.
Currently, Oleg Sentsov, who was convicted by a Russian court to 20 years in prison on charges of organizing terrorist attacks in anneksirovat the Crimea, recovering after a protest hunger strike, which he held from may 14 to October 5, 2018, demanding the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners from Russian prisons.
