A new topographical map of Antarctica with a resolution of two meters makes it the most details mapped continent of the planet.
Work on the preparation of new maps of the southern continent required the analysis of hundreds of satellite images obtained between 2009 and 2017. For comparison and enterprises had to develop customized software and to use the power of the supercomputer Blue Waters, working at the University of Minnesota. However, the resulting map REMA (Reference Elevation Model of Antarctica) displays different regions of the surface of Antarctica with a resolution of from two to eight meters — for comparison, so far the resolution of such maps was typically 1000 meters.

According to who led the work of a Professor of Ohio State University Ian Howat (Ian Howat), even Mars is considered much more detail. But now Antarctica mapped better than any other continent on Earth: the complete map at a maximum resolution is 150 TB of disk space.

It will help explorers to plan their work, and scientists — to monitor the rapid changes that have developed here in connection with global warming. We will remind, not so long ago from the mainland broke away the largest in the history of observations of the iceberg. Map of REMA contains data about the exact height of each portion of the surface of Antarctica with a precision of less than a meter and will allow you to notice and not so grandiose, but no less important events
