Remaker of the big classics of the cinema is always a risky business. Because the aura of the original will weigh still in the balance, that public expectations are enormous and that the trap is obvious. Yes, it must be, otherwise be at least as good as the model, at least bring something new, even starting in a totally different direction.
And if a few times, it works very well, as with Suspiria , for example, other times, it’s just the mega shame. And yes, RoboCop, we did not forgot, you see. And then there are the films like the Evil Dead by Fede Alvarez, who has returned to the sources horrific in the film matrix of Sam Raimi (who was not a comedy), takes the moments of the most iconic, pays his tribute constantly while appropriating its history to give a very different read (here, drug addiction).
If the film has not supplanted the Evil Dead original, it does not remain about it less very friendly and efficient, to such an extent that we would like to see the following one day, especially now that Ash vs Evil Dead is complete, and that Bruce Campbell has left this world. However, it still remains a mystery to be elucidated about this film : its possible place in the saga.
In fact, if most people see it as a remake, on the other hand, give him a place quite different in the saga, because of small details, such as the presence of the car’s iconic Ash in the film. Between theories and hypotheses, Fede Alvarez himself had just decided in the meeting on Twitter that his Evil Dead is absolutely not a remake :
“It is the sequel to the first film. The coincidences between the events of the first film and mine are not. This is more of a tragic destiny created by the book cursed. (The car of Ash is always there to rust”
So here, we can say now that it is official : the Evil Dead 2013 is not the remake ofEvil Dead. It is a sequel, with new characters, in the same place and facing the same threat. A new track for the rest of the saga at the time where you ask all the question of what it will become ?
