Ukraine will ask NATO to increase its presence in the Black sea.

Украина будет просить НАТО увеличить свое присутствие в Черном море, — Порошенко

In response to the aggression of Russia in the Azov sea, the seizure of the Ukrainian ship and the arrest of the sailors, Lithuania introduced its national sanctions against involved in the attack. And next week the EU will consider extending sanctions against Russia that were adopted earlier.

This was stated by President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite at a joint press conference with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in Kiev. The Lithuanian leader, who is in Ukraine on an official visit, said that Lithuanian officials received threats from Russia. This, in particular, the Minister of foreign Affairs Linas Linkevicius. “It is very important to condemn the aggressor. Such statements might endanger him more than military assistance”, — said Dalia Grybauskaite, and added: “the Azov sea is not a territory of Russia. There are international agreements. And if not, we will always support Ukraine and increase the assistance.”

In turn, Petro Poroshenko called on world leaders to follow the example of Lithuania and to introduce new sanctions against Russia. “In the Kerch Strait Ukraine has not taken any provocation — the ships had a scheduled rotation. Russia, by attacking boats of the Ukrainian Navy and seized the crew members, tried to provoke a large-scale ground operation”, — said the President and added that for the time elapsed since the attack off the coast of the occupied Crimea, Russia did not bother to provide any evidence that would justify their aggression. “Speaking about the need for Russia’s isolation, we expect that sanctions will be joined by other countries. This must be done in order to motivate the Russian Federation to respect international law and withdraw its troops from Crimea and Donbass” — said Poroshenko. He also stressed that Ukraine will appeal to NATO with a request to increase its presence in the Black sea.

As previously reported “FACTS”, Petro Poroshenko said that Russia is unpredictable in the choice of subject for aggression and what’s next after Ukraine may suffer the Baltic countries.

It was also reported that Germany proposed to discuss at the meeting, representatives of the Norman Quartet (Ukraine, France, Germany, Russia) in Berlin the question of the spread of the mission of the Organization for security and cooperation in Europe on the sea of Azov.
