What looks like the world around us when one has glaucoma ? The cataract impairs the perception of color ? Is it possible to read when suffering from a macular degeneration related to age (AMD) ? A new mobile app answers toall these questions : ViaOpta Sim*.
Vision disorders : a mobile application smart to help the sick every day.Color blindness : to know everything about this disorder of the visionTroubles of the vision : who do you see in this picture ?Orthoptist : to screen and rehabilitate the disorders of the visionPour better understand the jealousy
Vision disorders are not rare : in France, from the age of 20 years, 3 in 4 adult are concerned. Among the seniors, they are almost inevitable since 97 % of French people aged 60 years and older are affected.
Glaucoma, cataracts, etc. If some vision problems we are familiar, it is, however, difficult to imagine in a concrete way the difficulties that patients encounter in their daily lives.
Indeed, for the loved ones of people with visual impairments, it can be sometimes complex to understand how a simple gesture can be complicated.
Why Guillaume suffering from diabetic retinopathy does not see the water bottle which is just in front of him ? Why is Camille who has glaucoma severe doesn’t see his keys, which are only a few centimeters on his right hand ?
To help the families of the patients to better understand their difficulties in everyday life, Novartis launches the mobile application ViaOpta Sim, able to simulate the symptoms associated with different ocular pathologies.
Easy-to-use, this application is available for free on Apple’s app Store and the Google Play Store.
*AMD: macular Degeneration is age-related **OVCR: Occlusion of the central retinal vein – Novartis
• In concrete terms, it suffices to download and select a pathology among the 10 proposed : wet AMD or dry, occlusion of the central vein of the retina (OVCR), occlusion of the branch retinal vein (OBVR), neo-vascularization and choroidal secondary to myopia (NVCmyopique), diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema (dme), glaucoma, syndrome vitreomacular traction-macular (TVM) or cataract.
• The user, by filming his environment, discovers how the disease affects vision through a filter that simulates its symptoms.
• Thanks to a slider, it is possible, for certain disorders from the vision, to increase or decrease the severity of these symptoms.
The results are surprising : with glaucoma, for example, we can see that the vision is affected by a kind of “frame” and black blur that restricts the vision, while diabetic retinopathy leads to the appearance of “spots” in the middle of the field of vision.
